Born in 1958, Jack was raised by the scientists who worked in Rapture, an underwater metropolis created by a man named Andrew Ryan. Doctors Yi Suchong and Bridgette Tenenbaum were hired by a man rivaling Andrew Ryan’s power over the city of Rapture and his name was Frank Fontaine. The child’s birth, however, was a strange one. Jack’s mother, Mary-Catherine “Jasmine” Jolene who had been impregnated by Andrew Ryan sold the embryo to none other than Frank Fontaine. It is unclear whether it was before or after the child was born, but at some point when the father of the sold embryo found out about it, he ended things with his mistress Jasmine quite permanently, killing her. When Jack was born, though, he was tested on as an infant, being developed as means for Fontaine to eventually use the child against Ryan and assassinate ‘Rapture’s King’.

By the time Jack reached the age of one, he weighed about fifty-six points and according to Doctor Suchong, “had the gross musculature of a fit nineteen year old boy” thanks to the administrated product Suchong developed called ‘Lot 111’ – a product that was designed to speed up the growth process in children. Jack was the first to receive this kind of experimental treatment and seemed to be taking to it well. He and Bridgette Tenenbaum raised Jack more than anyone else, and throughout being raised he was having his mind imprinted with means for mind control, requested by Fontaine. This method of mind control is in a trigger phrase: “Would you kindly.”

Jack is then sent to the surface as a ‘sleeper agent’, meaning that he is to return to Rapture when he’s asked and not before. In his mind, he is living with his parents whom are an elderly couple although his is a faux reality as it is preprogrammed in his memories. Once he’s ‘activated’ by Fontaine, Jack is to return to Rapture and this activation comes in the form of a package with a letter asking him to book a flight, further in this letter there is the following: “Would you kindly not open until: 63° 2° N, 29° 55° W.” In the package is a pistol. Once the coordinates are reached, Jack opens the package and continues to follow instructions to cause a plane crash. In the ocean, he swims toward the only available structure, which is a lighthouse that serves as the above-surface entry point into Rapture.

From there, he descends into the city of Rapture via a bathysphere, which is the beginning of his traumatizing realizations. Throughout his time in Rapture, Jack learns everything about himself by means of Frank Fontaine, who initially masquerades as an Irish man named Atlas. Working his way through the city which is now in shambles and quite decrepit, Jack finds himself fending off strange creatures by the name of ‘splicers’ who were once people like himself, but are now insane from the overuse of plasmids (a gene altering serum injected into ones veins to give the use ‘super powers’ of sorts). Like the splicers, Jack injects himself with the plasmids to give him a bit of a boost when it comes to fending them off, though he hasn’t used enough to cause the insanity as they have.

While in Rapture, he meets a woman by the name of Doctor Bridgette Tenenbaum. With her help, and Atlas’ he manages his way through the city, leading to the discovery of his past, something which is hard to swallow for any mere man. In Rapture, the year is 1960 – meaning that now, as a fully grown man, Jack is merely two years of age because of Suchong’s serum for the age progression.

[I am skipping out on a lot of things in his history due to the fact that he was brought into play at the school after a BioShock plot was in play. Because of this, Fontaine was not defeated in Rapture and nor did Jack ever meet his father, Andrew Ryan.]
